My Thoughts On The Black Panther Movie (2018)

Black Panther (2018)

In Black Panther a meteorite made of vibranium, which is a nearly indestructible element crash landed from outer space. In the African region where it landed, would soon become Wakanda. Vibranium gives Wakanda advanced technological advantages. Fearing of what would happen if vibranium were to get into the wrong hands, they opted to keep it a secret from the rest of the world. Vibranium gives average people strength and super human powers, and that’s how the Black Panther came to be.

Some might say that the movie also wasn’t your typical super hero film which might bother others. There wasn’t enough fighting or big romantic scenes as most marvel movies have.

I think this movie is good because it exposed the need to use resources to help others and to never leave family behind. Also the super hero’s have super powers but also show emotion and compassion as humans do. An example is the deep hurt and remorse King T’Challa shows to Killmonger for the actions of his late father King T’Chaka.

King T’Chaka’s brother N’Jobu gets a thief for hire named Ulysses Klaue to help steal the vibranium. When King T’Chaka found out his brother helped steal the vibranium, he had no choice but to kill his brother for betraying the country of Wakanda. By killing his brother he also decided to leave N’Jobu’s young son Erik Killmonger behind to cover up the story of how his brother had died.

T’Challa becomes king and the Black Panther after his father King T’Chaka is killed in an attack. King T’Challa soon finds out that he has a cousin. He wants everyone to know in the kingdom, who he is and how his father was murdered by their late King T’Chaka. Erik wants to take the throne and all the weapons made of vibranium to arm all other oppressed Africans. He wants to make war and rise up and take over the world with Wakanda leading the way and controlling everything.

T’Challa really wrestled with the fact that his dad murdered his uncle and left his cousin behind. King T’Challa starts to question himself and what kind of king he is going to be for the people, and how to learn from his father’s mistakes.

The only way for Erik to take over the throne is to fight in a Wakandan ritual battle where the powers of the Black Panther are stripped away from the current king. The only way for one to lose is either one taps out and submits or is killed. Erik overpowers T’Challa and throws him off a cliff and is crowned the new king and Black Panther of Wakanda. Eric immediately takes his power and gets everyone to load all the weapons out to arm the Africans to take over the world.

When the time comes to battle, T’Challa who is actually alive doesn’t believe killing his cousin is the answer and offers him another way out. The cousin decides it is better to die than be in bondage for the rest of his life, knowing his beliefs and views will never change on the issue of his people being oppressed. T’Challa kills Erik and all of Wakanda was restored.

King T’Challa uses the bad decisions of his late father, and experience to do something about the oppressed. He buys the building and the buildings surrounding where his father killed his uncle and turns it into a science lab. The knowledge that Wakanda has to offer will now be shared with the rest of the world through that purchase.

The movie exposed the need to use resources to help others and to never leave family behind. Sometimes what we believe is right in the present time, isn’t always right and we may end up creating far more problems in the future.

“Good movies get us on board quickly.” “Within the first ten minutes, a well written movie will teach the audience how to watch it.” (Hornaday 4). Within the first ten minutes of Black Panther, there was a very interesting story and a cloud of emotional heaviness. When Erik’s dad was telling him about Wakanda, you could tell in his eyes he missed home but couldn’t go back for a reason. He was not welcomed there and neither was his son. “When you look into the eyes of a great performer, you can see the depth of their whole life, their history and their desires.” (Hornaday 44). With great actors you can almost see their heart beating and sense unconscious conflicts even they don’t sense. A good actor should be expressive like T’Challa was with his concerns for what his father did and how he left his cousin behind in a world without anything. The concern to try and find another way to help Erik without killing him was what T’Challa was trying so hard to do. T’Challa has to do what is best for Wakanda but also wants to do right by his cousin.

When the late N’Jobu was telling his son Erik about his hometown, he feared what might happen if the two were to return to Wakanda one day. Their ideas of helping other oppressed people were  not welcomed, and therefore they were pretty much exiled. “It’s the detail, depth, emotion and the sincereness of the screenplay that turn movies into amazingly crafted stories.” (Hornaday 8)

I think Black Panther tackles so many issues that we have going on daily in the world. Racial divide, oppression on races, and religious groups of people is what today’s world is really struggling with. By helping one another and reevaluating how we’ve chosen to do things might result in a different outcome. People aren’t perfect and we should never idolize them too much. We should learn from them and our mistakes to use our best judgement on what it the best course of action. Keeping that in mind, every decision that we make will affect us and all the relationships around us for the rest of our lives good or bad. Leaving no man behind is something we should strive to do. We should always be open minded with everything we do, because there might just be a better way of handling the situation that arises.
